Q. I notice that you call yourself  a multicultural salon. What does that mean?

A. South Florida has residents and visitors from all over the world with every possible ethnicity so we want to be able to take care of you whether you're white, black, Asian, Latin, biracial, Middle Eastern or from any part of the globe with any hair texture.  We will try our best to take care of your hair. Our stylists come from a variety of backgrounds and can work with or without chemicals. We will help you to manage your expectations and if we don't think we can help you achieve the look that you want in the way that you want to achieve it (without chemicals for example), we will be honest with you and let you know. Our stylists collaborate with each other and can come up with the best solution for your hair.

Q: I am Caucasian and do not have textured, kinky or curly hair. My hair is straight and not treated with any chemicals. Will you be able to cut and style my hair?

A.  Absolutely.  Many of our clients have straight or wavy hair.  Our clients come from every part of the world and every race and nationality.  Glow stylists work with any length and texture of hair. In addition, many of our hair products for curly or other hair types will work with all hair types, especially to reduce the frizz so common in South Florida.

Q. What is keratin? Is it a relaxer?

A. They are not chemical relaxers and they are not brazilian keratin treatments.  Keratin treatments are great for any texture hair and will help eliminate frizz and out of control curls. As keratin is infused into the hair, it penetrates deep into the cuticle giving the hair a naturally relaxed look. It leaves even the most porous, dry hair silky, shiny and healthy. It can last a few months depending on the condition of your hair, and it may be used on chemically relaxed hair. In fact, chemically treated hair often has better results. You may not wet your hair within 24 hours of the treatment. You should use sulfate free shampoos to protect your hair to prolong the benefits. If you want to use hair color, we recommend waiting at least 3 weeks or coloring hair before doing the keratin treatment to replace the protein lost during the coloring process. The process does not produce the strong fumes that stronger formaldehyde-based keratin treatments have, but it can produce some odors, and we do not recommend that pregnant or nursing women get this treatment. Some of our keratin treatments have trace amounts of  formaldehyde and some are organic. Ask your stylist which one is best for your hair type. We will always ensure that there is proper ventilation.  We also offer de Fabulous Amazon treatment which the manufacturer says does not have formaldehyde.

Q: I am biracial and have had problems finding products for my hair or stylists who can deal with my hair texture. Can Glow handle my hair?

A.  Our stylists have clients with all hair textures. We find that we are a solution for our bi-racial or multi-racial clients who have not been able to find local salons that offer the variety or quality of services that Glow has all in one place. Many of our clients come from Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe County for our services.

We also use and carry products specifically for your hair type, including Kera Care, Affirm, Elucence, Mizani, Mixed Chicks, Jane Carter Solution, Kinky-Curly, Miss Jessie's and Curls.  These products work well on call hair types, including for those clients who are growing out a relaxer, have dry hair, or have decided to work with their natural hair texture without chemicals. Many clients with straight or wavy hair also find these products to be nourishing for their hair.

Q.  What should I know before I have my first facial? How often should I get facials?

 A.  You should get a facial every four to six weeks since that's how long it takes for skin to regenerate, but we understand that not everyone can afford to do so, which is why we offer a number of facial treatments at different price points.   At a minimum, we recommend that you try to get one every four months or as the seasons change.  A facial involves a few basic steps:

  • cleansing
  • skin analysis, where the esthetician puts eye pads over your eyes and looks at your skin through a brightly lit magnifying lamp
  • exfoliation, usually while a steam vapor is directed at your face.
  • extraction of blackheads if you want it and it's suitable for your skin type.
  • facial massage to relax you and stimulate your skin and facial muscles
  • a mask targeted to your skin type (dry, oily, combination, sensitive, mature.)
  • application of toners and protective creams
  • advice on home skin care

Variations on the classic European facial include the "mini-facial" (cleansing without extractions) and specialty facials. Add vitamin C, and you have an "age defense" facial. It's a "collagen facial" when special collagen sheets are placed on the skin. A deep cleansing facial will pay special attention to extractions. We also offer chocolate enzyme treatments as well. Please consult with the esthetician if you would like any of these extra amenities added to your treatment.

Q. What do it mean to be "natural" when it comes to hair care (for African Americans)?

A.  Natural means different things to different people but basically it means wearing your hair texture without the aids of chemical straighteners.

Q.  Do I have to cut off all my relaxed hair or do a big "chop" to be natural?

A.  No,  If you aren't comfortable cutting off your hair you don't have to.  We can do alternative styles like the flexirods which combines the 2 textures together, or we can flat iron the hair with care if you like to wear straight styles.  There are other options but the main thing is to make sure we are taking care of your natural hair that is growing in so when you are ready to cut the hair it will be in good condition.

Q. Can I only use henna on my natural hair?

A.  Henna isn't your only choice you can definitely have color in your hair however you can't do henna on top of color or color on top of henna.  You have to decide if you think you might want color in the near future. If so then you must not do henna.  The two don't mix.

Q.  If I use a texturizer is my hair natural?

A.  No because a texturizer is a chemical agent that's used to relax the hair.  Texturizer is basically a mild relaxer.

Q. How often should I wash or shampoo my hair if my hair is natural?

A.  You should shampoo at least once a week but should co wash (conditioner wash) as often as needed.  For example if your hair starts to feel dry like it's dehydrated then it's time to do a co wash.  Naturally curly hair loves water especially if you are wearing it in the wash and go style.  However if you have your hair in a twisted style you can go a little longer without cowashing but you don't want to go too long meaning over 2 weeks.  Remember your hair is still natural  and it needs water and conditioner.

Q. Can my natural curl get more defined?

A.  Yes, but it's not something that will happen over night.  Curl defining takes training and usually more than one visit.  We can help with that but it takes commitment on your part to come to the salon.

Q.  How long will it take to curl more?

A.  Each head is different.  Some people see the results they are looking for in 2 -3 visits and others get results in more visits.  It depends on the hair.

Q.  Is color damaging to natural hair?

A.  Not if it's done correctly.

Q.  Does color loosen my curls?

A.  It can but so does henna but neither loosens the curl dramatically.

Q:  How should I prepare for my waxing or facial treatment at Glow?

A.  Drink plenty of water before and after your treatment and avoid meals one hour before the treatment.  Pregnant women, individuals with varicose veins, high blood pressure, diabetes, allergies, physical disabilities, other medical conditions, recent surgery, or using prescription medication should disclose this information to the esthetician prior to treatment.

We do not recommend waxing services on clients who are
taking Accutane, Retin-A, Differin, Tazorac, Renova, or antibiotics. These products sensitize the skin.  For best results, please allow facial hair be 1/8  inch and body hair to be 1/4 inch  long before waxing.

Q: Do I keep my underwear on for waxing the bikini area?

A. We supply disposable underwear or you can wear your own underwear, although there may be a risk of getting creams or wax on the fabric. For Brazilian waxes, we prefer that you remove your underwear.

Q: Can I get waxed during my period?

A. We don’t mind if you don’t mind, but please only wear a tampon and use the wipes provided.  Bear in mind waxing can be slightly more painful when you are premenstrual or menstruating.

Q: What should I do to prepare for my waxing treatment?

A. Gently exfoliate and moisturize the day before your treatment.  This will prepare your skin and remove dead skin cells, making your wax more comfortable.

We recommend not shaving for at least 2 and half weeks before a Brazilian wax. For some people the first Brazilian is usually the most difficult.  Over the course of several Brazilians (6 or more) you actually change the hair follicle to have a much finer root. The finer the root the less the pain. Shaving in between will always create a stronger follicle and more discomfort.

Q: How long will my hair removal treatment last?

A. Everyone is different, but all of us have three cycles of hair growth.  After your first session, you may experience re-growth sooner.  This is not the same hair that has just been waxed, it is the next cycle, or perhaps hair that was missed because it was too short for the wax to grip.  To help get all the hair into the same cycle, it is recommended that the first three visits are relatively close together.  Thereafter we recommend you return every 4-6 weeks.  Don’t be tempted to shave or tweeze between waxes.  Following this method, you will get the best and longest lasting results.

Q: I’ve heard that waxing can be painful. Is there anything I can do?

A. Some people take ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory half an hour before the treatment (consult your doctor and follow instructions on the packet!)  Never drink alcohol before waxing as it thins the blood.  Occasionally spots of blood come to the surface with coarser hair.  You tend to be more sensitive if you period is due or if you have a hangover. We also use a numbing spray in certain areas to ease the process.

Q: How do I get the most out of my waxing treatment?

A.  Be sure to tell the esthetician if you are taking certain medications or have certain medical conditions, as these could affect the treatment. After the first week use exfoliating gloves two or three times a week on the area.  Don’t use a natural loofah - bacteria thrive in the natural fibers.  Always moisturize after your shower, preferably with a tea tree or lavender cream, great for their antibacterial properties.  This allows the new hair to break through the surface of your skin and will minimize ingrown hairs.

Q: What about waxing aftercare?

A. Minimize sun exposure, deodorant, highly perfumed lotions and potions, extremely hot showers, sunbeds (for 48 hours), swimming pools, saunas, spas, and strenuous exercise (sweating) for 24 hours on the waxed areas.  Your pores are open, so you should avoid anything that would irritate the area or encourage bacteria.

Q:  My nails have been very damaged at other salons when I have used acrylics. Do you have any special treatments for this situation?

A. As natural nail care experts, we specialize in taking care of your natural nails, hands and feet.  We also believe that your experience in nail care should be relaxing and safe in a sanitized environment.  If you have had brittle nails after acrylics, we will nurse them back to health.  If we place acrylics on your nails, we will ensure that we care for your nails in a manner that will leave them as healthy as possible should you choose to remove them.
